The Rochester LGBT Health Coalition joined the nationwide efforts of The National Coalition for LGBT Health in 2006 by creating the first annual Rochester LGBT Health Week. The week included a full schedule including special events, workshops, community forums, outreach and testing opportunities. It also featured the first annual LGBT Community Health Fair.
The Rochester LGBT Health Coalition, convened by AIDS Rochester, is a group of local agencies and groups who are invested in the health & wellness of the Rochester LGBT community including: AIDS Rochester, Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, Men of Color Health Awareness Project, Empire State Pride Agenda, Huther-Doyle, Planned Parenthood & Rape Crisis Services, Westside Community Health Center, the HIV Vaccine Trials Unit and the Monroe County & NY State Departments of Health.
In March 2003 The National Coalition for LGBT Health announced the first annual National LGBT Health Awareness Week. Every spring since then a full week in the March or April has been identified to carry on the mission to promote a healthy lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community across the nation. The Coalition set out in that first year with four primary objectives for the LGBT Health Awareness Week.
- Raise public awareness of the unique health concerns and very real health disparities that face the LGBT community. These LGBT health issues included: LGBT Aging, Cancer, Domestic Violence, Smoking, Mental Health, Genital Warts and HPV, Nutrition and Weight, Sexual Health, Access to Quality Healthcare, Hepatitis, Transgender Health and LGBT Youth Issues.
- Educate the LGBT health communities about the issues that are present in our communities because awareness must be significantly improved.
- Provide community health centers, local organizations, and community representatives with tools to address national concerns at the local level.
- Educate medical and health care professionals in the area of cultural competency with regard to LGBT health.
